Since single-use disposable vapes were banned in England in June 2025, most people switching have two options: a rechargeable pre-filled pod kit, or a refillable vape kit. Both are rechargeable and both are legal. The difference is how you get the liquid in.
What is a pre-filled pod kit?
A pre-filled pod kit is a rechargeable battery with a sealed pod that already contains e-liquid. When the pod runs out you click in a new one. There is no bottle to pour and no coil to change. Popular examples include the Elf Bar, Lost Mary, Hayati Pro Max, IVG, Pixl and Hyola kits in our pre-filled kits range.
What is a refillable vape kit?
A refillable kit has a pod or tank you fill yourself from a 10ml bottle. You choose any compatible e-liquid or nic salt, and replace the pod or coil every week or two. Compact kits like the Vaporesso XROS and OXVA XLIM are the most popular starting points; see our vape kits.
Side by side
| Pre-filled pod kit | Refillable kit | |
|---|---|---|
| Set-up | None: click in a pod | Fill the pod, let the coil soak |
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher |
| Running cost | Higher per ml | Lower per ml |
| Flavour choice | The pods that brand makes | Any e-liquid or nic salt |
| Upkeep | Charge the battery | Charge, refill, change pods |
Which should you choose?
Choose pre-filled if you want something that works like a disposable did: no mess, no set-up, just swap the pod. Keep a few spare prefilled pods in your bag and you are sorted.
Choose refillable if you vape a lot and want to spend less over time, or you want a wider choice of flavours. Pair your kit with nic salts for a smooth draw and stock up on replacement pods.
Not sure? Many people start with a pre-filled kit and move to refillable once they know which flavours they like.
Vaping products contain nicotine and are for adults aged 18 and over only.
