Nic Salts vs Freebase E-Liquid: What Is the Difference?

Walk into any vape shop and you will see two kinds of 10ml bottle: nic salts and freebase e-liquid. They do the same job but feel quite different, and the right one depends on your device.

Freebase e-liquid

Freebase is the original form of nicotine used in e-liquids. At higher strengths it gives a stronger throat hit, which some people like and others find harsh. Freebase is common in shortfills, where the bottle is sold nicotine-free with room to add a nic shot; see our shortfill e-liquids.

Nic salts

Nicotine salts are blended with a mild acid, which makes them feel smoother at the same strength. That is why they are the usual choice for small, low-powered pod kits, and why the liquid in most pre-filled pods is a nic salt. Our nic salts include ranges from Elfliq, Elux, Hayati, Pixl, IVG, Doozy and Dinner Lady, many made to taste like popular pre-filled flavours.

Which suits your kit?

  • Small pod kits (XROS, XLIM, Caliburn, ELFX): nic salts are the natural fit.
  • Higher-powered kits (Voopoo Drag, Argus): lower-strength freebase or shortfills tend to work better, because they produce more vapour.

Whatever you choose, UK law caps nicotine e-liquid at 20mg/ml in bottles of 10ml or less, so every bottle we sell is TPD-compliant.

Quick summary

If you are moving from a disposable or pre-filled kit to a refillable vape kit, start with nic salts: they will feel the most familiar.

Vaping products contain nicotine and are for adults aged 18 and over only.
